Nothing is an American shoegaze band born in Philadelphia around singer and songwriter Domenic “Nicky” Palermo. Since its beginnings in 2010 as a solo project, Nothing has constantly pushed the boundaries of the genre, transforming the codes of shoegaze into a more abrasive, massive, and emotionally frontal language. Between walls of saturated guitars, industrial distortions, and bursts of more stripped-back melancholy, the band explores the extremes of the human experience, from rage to the most intimate fragility. Their album A Short History of Decay (Run For Cover Records) embodies this duality, further expanding their sonic palette. Supported by a reinforced lineup and collaborations with Nicholas Bassett or Sonny Diperri, Nothing develops an aesthetic that is both monumental and vulnerable. Tracks like Cannibal World or Purple Strings, which notably features harpist Mary Lattimore, illustrate this tension between chaos and delicacy. Conceived as a form of “final chapter,” this record does not just close a period: it condenses an entire trajectory made of disillusionment, reinvention, and sonic excess, confirming Nothing as one of the most singular projects in contemporary shoegaze.
