SUMMER TOURS 2026 - De Blankaart

DE BLANKAART - WOUMEN - 7 KM This time we leave the castle, castle park, and the romantic arched bridge to the left and walk along the back of the Blankaart. Uncharted territory for most hikers. We follow the old church path between Woumen and Merkem to the Maypole with a view of the Beukelaremolen van Merkem which is still in use. By the way, you can buy Beukelare bread at the local bakery Naessens. Bread baked with wheat ground in the nearby mill. We walk along the winter dike that is supposed to protect the 'Oosteinde' of Merkem from flooding and functioned perfectly in 2023. The white-tailed eagle will never disappear from our field of vision during the walk, just like the two duck decoys, the nurseries of the Yser Valley.
