Professor at Columbia University in New York, Souleymane Bachir Diagne placed the question of universality and singularities at the heart of his reflection and engagement, calling for a universal enriched by all particularities. In his essay Universaliser: L'humanité par les moyens d'humanité which brings cultures into dialogue, the philosopher demonstrates that the universal takes into account the plural nature of the world, but that humanity is not a juxtaposition of tribes. At a time when ethno-nationalist principles, tribalism, and behaviors of domination and predation between nations and cultures are triumphing, Souleymane Bachir Diagne chooses to have faith in humanity and defends the universal as the common work of mankind.
