No parking: a history of garages in the city

sam. 20 juin 2026
Devant le square du Bois (lieu-dit square des milliardaires) / avenue Louise, au pied de la statue de lutte équestre, Brussels
Alongside the urban upheavals caused by highway infrastructure, the city has also inherited remarkable built heritage directly linked to the generalization of car use: garages, gas stations, workshops, parking lots… Although apparently ordinary, this heritage is far from trivial: these places refer us to an industrious past, a social history, and technical innovations that deserve to be revealed and documented. At a time when many real estate projects are replacing and erasing part of this heritage, the ARAU will take you strolling from block to block in a neighborhood historically marked by the establishment of numerous activities linked to the car. De la Bascule at Châtelain, from the garages of the Square des Milliardaires to the d'Ieteren tower, we will set off to discover the multiple facets of these urban garages and current renovation projects. The impact of the automobile in the city is therefore not just a story of pressure, but also of conservation and conversion!
