The Stalingrad-Lemonnier neighborhood is caught in a vice between the small ring, the North-South railway junction, and the historic city center. This Pentagon neighborhood has been the cradle of lasting commercial activity since the 19th century. Shaken many times by major urban planning works in the 20th century, the neighborhood, recently renovated by public authorities, is today once again confronted with very heavy infrastructure works: the construction of the North metro, launched in 2020 by the Brussels Region and the STIB. This latest upheaval could well threaten the very existence of the shops around Stalingrad Avenue.
Recently, the Region's decision to demolish the Palais du Midi to make way for its metro has made headlines. The ARAU has submitted a request for the building to be listed to preserve this architectural jewel.
