As the Belgian labor movement was formed in the 19th and 20th centuries, new social institutions were created such as people's houses, trade unions, mutual insurance companies, housing cooperatives, popular insurances, etc. From Art Nouveau to Modernism, various progressive architects then worked on the construction of buildings intended to house these new institutions in a style reflecting at each era the ideals of progress and emancipation of the working class. Among them, the Brunfauts are undoubtedly those who left the most mark on Brussels by the richness and profusion of their creations.
