Pavilion of Human Passions, Brussels
€5–12
In the Cinquantenaire Park is a small building resembling a Greek temple. For the young Victor Horta, this pavilion was his first public commission. The design, which incorporates elements of Greek typology, also shows the beginnings of Art Nouveau, visible in the details. Inside is the monumental relief "Les Passions human" by Jef Lambeaux. This impressive work (11 meters long by 6 meters high) in Carrara marble represents the pleasures and sufferings of humanity. Since 1898, the small neoclassical temple of Victor Horta and the relief of Jef Lambeaux have been inextricably linked. The tumultuous relationship between the two artists, the sensually winding nude, and the building, often closed due to its precarious state, have contributed to the history, 'scandal,' and mystery surrounding the pavilion. After a thorough restoration in 2019, the pavilion regained its grandeur from before the long closure.
