Dam Antwerpen| Neighborhood in transformation | 2026

Recent transformations of Den Dam Since 2017, cyclists and pedestrians have been able to reach the centre of Antwerp from Merksem via a new bridge over the Albert Canal. A year earlier, a new school opened in Park Spoor Noord and various projects were developed in and around the Slachthuissite that would strongly change the neighbourhood. Meanwhile, 8 years have passed and a great deal has changed in both the public space and in terms of housing construction. The nature and scale of the transformations that are becoming visible in and along the Wijk Dam and the Slachthuissite are still unknown to most Antwerp residents. Where the neighbourhood until recently turned its back on Merksem and the Ring viaduct, new connections are being made with the future Ringpark Lobroekdok. The nearby Sportpaleis will reverse its front and back after the covering of the Ring, a large part of the slaughterhouse site has meanwhile been converted into a new campus of AP University of Applied Sciences, new streets and squares have been realised in the public space between the residential blocks… in short, this is where it's happening. Expeditie De Stad has mapped out all recent and ongoing projects and would like to take you on an exploration to reflect on recent, current and future developments alongside the old sights.
