The famous actress Derya and her husband Aziz, a drama professor, lead a happy life in Ankara together with their daughter. Until an incident during the premiere of their new play suddenly makes them experience the arbitrariness of the Turkish state. They are forced to give up their jobs and leave their house. They have to move in with Aziz's mother in Istanbul and build a new life there. Derya views this pragmatically, while Aziz remains idealistic. The acting in this film is sublime. The choice to situate Berlin as Ankara and Hamburg as Istanbul works wonderfully. This film is more than worth it and deals with current socio-political themes such as artistic freedom versus political repression, an authoritarian political system versus ideals, family versus external pressure. The director of 'Das Lehrerzimmer' shows, by means of a sizzling thriller, the moral complexity of an authoritarian system and the dynamics of a family under high tension.
