Walk 3 of the cycle: Ghent unraveled! In the 19th century, Ghent was the largest industrial city in Flanders. The working and living conditions of the workers were often harrowing. Walk past the beluiken (slum alleys) and the workers' houses they lived in. The workers united in a struggle for better working conditions, higher wages, and a dignified existence. De Vrijdagmarkt was the scene of workers' uprisings that our guide will tell you all about in vivid detail. But it was not all doom and gloom. There were also party palaces for workers and theater for the people.
