Redmond Walk 2026

William Redmond was a member of parliament in the Irish nationalist party of his brother John Redmond. In 1914, he recruited thousands of Irishmen to fight in the Britse Leger in the hope of obtaining self-government for Ireland. As a major in the 16th (Irish) Division, he stood next to the 36th (Ulster) Division to storm Wijtschate together on June 7, 1917. William Redmond was wounded in the first moments of the attack and died. During this early morning walk (10 km), we will follow in the footsteps of William Redmond from the mine crater of Wijtschate, via Lindenhoek over the Kemmelberg to the grave of Redmond in Loker. We will gather at 3:15 a.m. at the Kerkplein in Loker. Departure by bus to Wijtschate at 3:30 a.m. and start of the walk at one of the mine craters at 4:10 a.m. (Zero hour on June 7, 1917, was 3:10 a.m.). The walk is guided by Piet Chielens, and the musical accompaniment is provided by Luc Cuppens and Dries Chaerle.
