DJ Ahmet

Fifteen-year-old Ahmet lives in a remote village in North Macedonia, in a conservative Yörük Muslim community. After his mother's death, he was taken out of school by his strict father. He has to herd the sheep and take care of his little brother Naim, who hasn't said a word since the passing. Ahmet finds redemption in his electronic dance music and dreams of a career as a DJ. Then he falls in love with a girl who came over from Germany because she was betrothed. In the ultra-patriarchal community, Ahmet's dreams seem hopeless, but with help from an unexpected source, he perseveres. Commentary A DJ on a tractor and pink sheep in a field: they are not the only surprises in this heartwarming feel-good film about identity and traditions. Just like in the classic crowd-pleaser Footloose , teenagers dance their way to freedom, and this charming, colorful film by Georgi M. Unkovski relies on a strong soundtrack, eye-pleasing images, and the natural acting of the cast. Authentic, accessible, and very infectious. The film had its premiere at Sundance and captured the hearts of the audience there.
