On Sunday, June 7, Natuurpunt Markvallei is once again organizing a Mar(k)athon walk. After all, in 2026, everyone can walk a marathon thanks to Natuurpunt Markvallei. Participate in our walks in the Mark Valley and add up the distances covered. With a stamp card, you can keep track of your progress in the Mar(k)athon and become eligible for prizes in various categories. Everyone is, of course, always a winner, because there is nothing as healthy and relaxing as walking in our nature reserves. On June 7, we will walk through the Zwart Goor nature reserve and pay attention to Martin Verbeeck (1882-1959) and the influence he had on a number of developments in the Kempen region. On Sunday at 2 PM , we will depart from the Kapel of the Geheul for a journey of discovery that connects nature, history, and a touch of art. Zwart Goor is a valuable nature reserve today with varied heathland, forests, lanes, and quiet pond areas. However, the landscape we find there also bears the traces of its rich history. A striking figure in this is Martin Verbeeck (1882–1959) , an influential Belgian industrialist who acquired the estate in 1919. Verbeeck, involved in the cement industry and active as a shareholder at Cimenteries et Briqueteries Réunies, was known for his love of artistic concrete architecture. In the 1920s, he had various cement ornaments placed on his estate, such as rustic fencing, small bridges, benches, and even a gate in a characteristic faux-bois style. In addition, he had a pinetum laid out, a collection of special conifers that still gives a distinct character to the part of the estate developed by him. His ambition went beyond aesthetics: under his management, Zwart Goor also became a well-organized agricultural and horticultural business, including a thriving florist shop and various stables. Today, the area is managed with attention to nature restoration. Old heathland plots are being reopened, forests are being enriched, and pools offer opportunities for amphibians and numerous other animal species. Thanks to this management, Zwart Goor remains a place where both natural values and historical landscape elements are preserved. During the walk, you will discover not only the natural beauty of the area but also the surprising and sometimes hidden legacy of Martin Verbeeck. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
