music in dialogue with color What if colors could sing? That question forms the starting point of Singing Red at the KMSKA, where color is no longer merely visible but vibrates, moves, and becomes a sensory force. Artists like Ensor, Wouters, and Schmalzigaug did not consider color as decoration, but as energy, rhythm, and intensity — a quality you can almost hear. Precisely that thought is also central to our concert. The three works on the program approach music as a play of light, shadow, and timbre. It is not melody or form that is paramount, but the experience of sound itself: how a timbre lights up, condenses, discolors, or dissolves. Bij Claude Debussy gives sound an impressionistic glow, in which harmonies move like light on water. In Luc Brewaeys’ Painted Pyramids becomes sound architecture: built from overtones, resonances, and electronic shadows, like painted volumes in a futuristic field of color. En Tristan Murail, finally, lets sound transform slowly, just as a sunset unfolds in increasingly subtle shades.
