Queen Elisabeth Competition I Cello Festival

Queen Elisabeth Competition I Cello

mer. 10 juin 2026
Flagey & Bozar, Brussels
The Queen Elisabeth Competition is recognised as one of the most prestigious and demanding music competitions in the world. For young violinists, pianists, singers and cellists aspiring to an international career, it serves as a true springboard. What makes the Competition unique? A world-renowned jury, rigorous rules, unparalleled media coverage, and the warm enthusiasm of the Belgian public and the Royal Family. After an exceptional and fully sold-out 2025 Piano edition, the cello will be celebrated in 2026. Throughout the competition, the cellists interpret a diverse repertoire that spans various musical periods and styles. They also must showcase their own interpretations of two imposed contemporary works, specially written for the Competition. One is part of the semi-final recital programme, the other - a work with orchestra accompaniment - must be studied for the final without any external assistance during a week's stay at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. We are happy to welcome you in May to Flagey for the first round and semi-final or the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts for the final to discover these excellent musicians with us! In June, the laureates will give recitals and concerts at Flagey and Bozar too. This year, we proudly mark the 75th anniversary of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, as well as the 150th anniversary of the birthday of Queen Elisabeth and Pablo Casals, one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century whose Goffriller cello ‘Casals’ will be loaned for four years to the First Prizewinner of the 2026 Competition.
