Archaeological walk: in the footsteps of the Senne – with urban.brussels

vr 12 jun 2026
Sewer Museum, Brussels
This walk takes you in the footsteps of the Senne within the Pentagon, along the recent archaeological excavations of urban.brussels, but also along older discoveries. Even though the river may have disappeared from the urban landscape after its vaulting in the second half of the 19th century, it has left a lasting mark on the city center. Witness to a time when only mammoths and other prehistoric animals inhabited the valley, it would later become inextricably linked to the birth of Brussels, where a portus is mentioned as early as the 11th century. De Zenne plays an important role in the development of urban planning and artisanal and industrial activities. It was also an important waterway until the Willebroek canal was opened in 1561. In collaboration with urban.brussels, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Museum Kunst and History.   Practical information Dates and time 12.06 from 16:30 > 18:00 14.06 from 10:30 > 12:00 12.06 Starting point at the Sewer Museum (meeting at the museum entrance), ending point at Brucity. 14.06 Starting point at Brucity (Kiekenmarkt side), ending point at the Sewer Museum.
