Friday, June 19 Concert 1: Dionysos Now! - The Legacy of Adriaen Willaert Pure polyphony For thirty-five years (1527-1562), Willaert was connected to the San Marco Basiliek as Maestro di Capella. He founded the Venetiaanse School there. Even before that time, he stood out for his excellent qualities as a composer and musician. The impact that his innovative way of composing had can be seen in the 'network' that formed around him, which would remain a constant until his death. The skeleton of this tribute concert is the seven-part Missa ‘Praeter Rerum Serium’ by Cypriano de Rore, one of Willaert's protégés and later colleague, who would become his successor as chapel master of the San Marco Basiliek. With Met Willaerts Da Pacem Domine and the monumental Benedicta es, celorum Regina, one of the composer's most beautiful motets, the concert finds a poignant conclusion, dedicated to one of the great innovators of Renaissance polyphony.
