FILMFORUM: The African Queen
Great Britain (101 min.)
1914. Samuel Sawyer and his sister Rose lead a church in East Africa. During a German raid, the natives are driven from their homes and Samuel loses his life. Rose flees with Charlie Allnutt, an adventurer and drunkard, on his boat the 'African Queen'. The two are each other's opposites: she is a temperamental woman with strong convictions, he is a loner who has long since lost ideals and outward signs of civilization. When Wanneer Rose suggests sailing down the dangerous Ulonga-Bora river where the German warship the 'Louisa' rules, Charlie thinks she has gone completely crazy.
