The legendary Australian cult trio The Necks has been improvising for 40 years with a unique, distinctive sound. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (bass) have perfected their unconventional sound over the course of eighteen albums: long pieces that unfold in an enchanting manner, carried along by a sustained, deep groove. The deceptive simplicity of their music reveals new details with every listen. Not quite avant-garde, nor minimalist, ambient or jazz: The Necks’ music is in a league of its own. Few bands manage to maintain such consistent quality over decades whilst still sounding so distinctive. Just have a listen to their debut album Sex (1989) and then their latest Disquiet (2025).
