At the end of the 19th century, priest Adolf Daens returns to his hometown of Aalst. It is plagued by social inequality, child labor, low wages, and abysmal working conditions in the textile industry. When Wanneer Daens denounces the abuses, he incurs the wrath of factory directors and church authorities. He founds the Christene Volkspartij, is elected as a member of parliament, and thus puts the rights of ordinary people on the agenda, with far-reaching consequences for the city, the church, and his own vocation as a priest. This impressive work is a detailed historical fresco about the fight for justice and the sacrifices that must be made for it. "Daens is still one of the most successful and most appreciated Flemish film productions of all time (was the first Flemish film to be nominated for an Oscar). The story of a priest who around the turn of the previous century stood up against poverty and child labor in the textile factories ... is still just as relevant." – De Morgen Deze activity is part of A hearty potato against poverty, a solidarity campaign by N22, the network of the 22 Brussels community centers.
