In 1917, there was a German military airfield here. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog the importance of military aviation increased significantly. On this site, located in the so-called Marinegebiet, aircraft departed for observations and bombings of enemy positions and movements above the sea and the land front. The personnel and command bunker that still stand today are silent witnesses to this special piece of war history. Using aerial photographs, plans, documents, and personal stories, you will discover how the airfield was built, who worked there, and what role the site played during the Eerste Wereldoorlog.
