Extant is an Antwerp initiative dedicated to the development and production of new contemporary performative sound art. De Extant Excursies strengthen the exchange of knowledge and artistic methodologies between makers and listeners. On June 13, 2026, we will head to the Kalmthoutse Heide for a listening and recording session. With specialized microphones and under the expert guidance of bird guide Chantal Van Gool van Vogelwerkgroep De Stadsmus, we will dive into the sonorous living world of the Nightjar. It is a project to bring nature and art closer to each other and to people in a creative way. The mysterious nightjar lives in heathland, pine forests, and sand drifts. During the day, you will barely see this well-camouflaged singing wonder sitting on the pine and birch branches. You need a good dose of luck for that. But during deep twilight and at night, its special rattling song betrays its presence. A singing nightjar can produce up to 1900 notes per minute! During the courtship period, you can hear the male frantically flapping its wings against each other in flight. And we are going to bring those sounds to you in a special way! Curious? So are we!!
