This activity is fully booked! Brussels Academy, Uitgeverij Acco and the Willemsfonds present The code of the street by Matthias De Backer, introduced by Sven Gatz Safety, living together and behavior in the city are higher on the agenda than ever. Through street furniture, bollards and lighting, our behavior is steered: they invite or ward off. Who feels welcome, and who doesn't? The code of the street is a compact book full of interesting facts about how people (should or should not) behave in public space, written by criminologist and urban geographer Mattias De Backer. What are the rules that you follow, consciously or not, when you are on streets, squares, in parks, the subway or other public spaces? What is problematic about the word 'nuisance' and why do we almost automatically (and often unjustifiably) think of young people? Is public space really for everyone or does it just seem that way? Het Willemsfonds Brussel is deeply rooted in our city. Understanding the ever-changing city, but also spreading it, fits into our DNA. As a social-cultural association, we are more than a range of cultural activities. We think along about Brussels and urbanity. Together with the Brussels Academy, the open city university (www.brusselsacademy.be), we are organizing this book presentation. Mattias De Backer, professor at the VUB, already presented the book in Ghent, but Brussels could of course not be left out. After the program, there will be a reception with book sales and a signing session.
