Orwell

As he approaches his death, George Orwell stays on the British island of Jura. He reflects on a life dedicated to denouncing power and manipulation. As his health deteriorates, he works on his last novel: 1984. As early as 1949, George Orwell wrote: "Big Brother is watching you". He had a prophetic vision, as Raoul Peck points out in this documentary, which he constructs in a similar way to his film about James Baldwin, "I Am Not Your Negro". Through excerpts from his diary and letters, Orwell (voiced by Damian Lewis) looks back on his life: from the class society and the Spanish Civil War to his stay in Burma. This serves as a basis for a profusion of images illustrating events that occurred all over the world: from the Seconde Guerre world war to the era of deepfakes and new totalitarianism, with the contemporary newspeak of Trump and Putin, among others.
