I Dreamed the Revolution

1791. For 6 days and 6 nights, in a cell of the Conciergerie de Paris, we will follow an exceptional prisoner. Locked up, watched, having no more space to walk, she writes. Because writing opens a field of freedom. Always. Around her, a young soldier stands guard. His revolutionary ideal will turn into murderous fanaticism. There is also the young soldier's mother, illiterate, intelligent and sensitive, moved by this spirited prisoner, and who can no longer bear to be afraid for this son who is moving away from the values she instilled in him. And then there is a young woman, not so naive, who will offer the prisoner to attempt an escape. The prisoner is Olympe de Gouges, the revolutionary humanist, who will write the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen. And thereby will trace a path of courage, audacity and nerve. At a time when Western democracies are shaken, undermined by the convictions of narrow-minded spirits, this woman will give us wings. Without manichaeism, the play weaves threads and encourages us, by ricochet, to be vigilant.
