Living in a world with artificial intelligence, robots and social inequality. It already appeared in the science fiction of a century ago. The iconic classic Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang feels more relevant than ever. We experience a city in 2026, as Fritz Lang saw it in 1927: underground, workers toil to keep colossal machines running, while above them the elite live in luxury. Central is a young woman, who offers the workers hope and calls for harmony – until her appearance is copied to a robot that is programmed with a completely different goal… This immersive, timeless classic asks questions about power, technology and humanity that feel just as urgent today as they did then, but does the end of the film offer a satisfying answer? Vocal ensemble Wishful Singing sings new music by Steven Kamperman, which he composed especially for this ensemble. The sound of people, the sound of machines, penetrating percussion and ghostly vocal parts give a new experience of an old film and also challenge you to question the ending of the visionary motion picture 100 years after its premiere. Bezetting Zang: Wishful Singing (Anne-Christine Wemekamp, Marjolein Stots, Maria Goetze, Tal Shasha) Bass clarinet: Steven Kamperman Drum & modular synthesizer: Yonga Sun Elektrische guitar & programming live electronic music: Jorrit Westerhof Credits Compositie: Steven Kamperman Geluid: Koen Keevel Dramaturgie & Artistieke Ondersteuning – Stella Brüggen and Xandra Mizée Campagnebeeld: Henry Faber Filmmaker: Fritz Lang
