Opera Reprise 2026: The Last Sueño de Frida and

On May 30, the 2025–26 season of the Metropolitan Opera concludes with a live broadcast of the first opera by American composer Gabriela Lena Frank, a magical-realist portrait of the iconic Mexican artist couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The libretto, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz, reverses the Orpheus and Eurydice motif: Frida, sung by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaves the underworld on the Day of the Dead and is reunited with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The notorious lovers briefly relive their tumultuous relationship, with both the passion and the pain, before finally saying goodbye to the realm of the living. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met premiere of Frank's opera, a “confident, richly orchestrated score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh originality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production, enthusiastically inspired by the paintings of Frida and Diego, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker.
