Multi-platinum artist Sam Bettens has just released a country-Americana album to the world and thus takes a new step in his already rich career. Widely praised for his musicality and enthusiasm, Bettens proves once again why he still belongs on the biggest stages. Only a true artist withstands the test of time, and although Bettens already has a rich career, this album breathes a youthful freshness, covered with the maturity and unvarnished truth of an experienced songwriter. Bettens grew up in Antwerp and therefore not on an idyllic Texan ranch, listening to the latest record of Hank Williams. And yet. Yet he manages in one way or another to tap into an old-fashioned authenticity of country music, seemingly without too much effort. With lyrics that flow like water and a voice that sounds like he has already experienced a thing or two, you believe every word as if you were there yourself. Perhaps it was his 15-year stay in East Tennessee, of which a number of years as a full-time firefighter, that made this transition from alternative rock to Americana so effortless for Bettens. Whatever it may be, his American citizenship is not only reflected in his passport. Call it country or Americana, this album just makes you want to pack your bags and take a road trip through the rural south of the States. For the recordings of the record in Nashville, the mecca of country music, Bettens recruited none other than Tom Bukovac, 4 times elected as guitarist of the year by the Academy of Country Music. Bukovac put together an impressive company of musicians and lifted these songs to the radio-friendly level they deserve. Bettens is still half of K's Choice, the band with which he has been traveling the world with his brother since he was nineteen. With international hits like 'Not an Addict' and 'Believe', K's Choice quickly established itself at the top of the international alternative rock scene and has actually never left it. But even K's Choice had its Americana and melancholic singer-songwriter moments, and it is wonderful to see that side of Bettens in the spotlight now. This is the kind of record for which vinyl has made a comeback. Drop the needle, pour yourself a generous splash of whiskey, close your eyes, and let Bettens’ voice do the rest.
