A Spanish Play

What if the theater revealed who we really are? In Une pièce espagnole, a troupe of actors rehearse... a Spanish play. But very quickly, the roles crack. The actors leave their characters, confide, contradict each other, observe each other. Between fiction and reality, the boundaries become blurred. The stage and private life intertwine, revealing fragilities. The masks fall and we then witness something rare: the theater looking at itself. Behind the biting humor and the absurd situations, appear the flaws, the desires, the vanities and the fragilities of each one. As usual, Yasmina Reza spares no one, and, by telling our neuroses, she reveals us. By casting a cruel and amused look at her characters, she leads us into a dizzying game of mirrors. Like Russian dolls that discover themselves to infinity, she likes to reveal these roles that allow us to hide, to lie to ourselves and to lie to the world. She signs here a scathing and elegant comedy of which she has the secret. Funny, incisive and deeply human, this play reminds us that on stage as in life, we all play roles... without always knowing which ones.
