Once upon a time… there was an uninhabited grassland on the bank of the Grote Nete in the Zandstraat in Geel. In the spring of 2014, the boring grassland was plowed. The planting and sowing could begin.
Today it is an ecological and bio-diverse gem that is buzzing with life… a combination of herb garden, edible (weeds), vegetable garden, fruit garden, and nectar plants for bees, butterflies, and other insects. Two years ago, a vegetable garden was laid out according to the permaculture method.
We take a walk in the garden with explanations about the nectar plants, but also about the herbs, edible flowers, and the vegetables in the vegetable beds…
Every visit to the garden is different. In the spring, the early spring bloomers and the spring herbs get the attention. In the height of summer, it is the colors and scents of the summer bloomers and edible flowers that catch the eye.
During the tour, we also reflect on the nutritional and health aspects. How do we get the best out of our garlic? The lycopene from tomatoes prepared as soup or sauce is better absorbed by our body. Why is it best to eat cabbage with mustard?
After the tour, we would like to offer you a refreshment from the garden, depending on what the garden has to offer us at that moment. Infusion of herbs and pastry or a tasty soup… In case of rain, we can find shelter in the large tunnel greenhouse and there is a toilet available. You are very welcome!
