They continue to capture the imagination, those Beguines. Het Groot Begijnhof Sint-Elisabeth was built between 1873 and 1874 in a rather hallucinatory operation: in less than two years, 18 contractors and 600 workers erected a total of 80 houses, 14 convents, a 'great house', an infirmary, a chapel, and a church.
