Wawa stands on her roof.
The apartment building where she lives
peaks 29 stories above everything.
Below, the city rushes by.
But up here everything is quiet and soft.
In her greenhouse on the roof,
her little universe,
everything changes from day to day
according to her own needs.
Wawa can be anything here.
Grow with the hours of the day,
the time of the year and the wind in her head.
Today a bird with one lame wing.
Tomorrow a lighthouse that never bows to a storm.
One day a girl stands on her roof.
She jumps inside, rushes by,
Looks at Wawa, rolls her eyes,
disappears and returns again.
She is looking for her mother
and herself, because she has lost her for a moment.
‘If I don't know who I am, maybe I'm nothing!’ she thinks.
And nothing is not doable!
Wawa looks at her.
With soft eyes and a quiet voice, she thinks:
‘Herself? Is that one thing?
You can be anything!’
She closes her eyes.
She is an old oak.
With long roots
Down to the fire of the earth.
Two characters meet: one is a ‘normal’ teenager, the other is… something ‘else’. Their attempt at dialogue leads to absurd conversations, surprising transformations, and unexpected intimate moments.
Eva Mareen and Flora Van Canneyt are together Trage Vaart, a young, open makers' collective with an extra sensitivity and love for groups in a vulnerable situation. In this performance, they playfully address the theme of neurodivergence, and more specifically autism. Within their mission of accessibility and inclusivity, WAWA is a gentle and low-stimulus performance.
