Through singing, rap, and spoken text, Annelie tells her personal story. Her desire to stay with her lover is just as great as her instinct to flee. In her previous relationship, she cheated; this time, she is doing everything she can to stay together. How does she stay together? And how do other people do that? HEARTBURN refers to both heartburn and a burning heart. It depicts how love also manifests itself physically; the loss of control and the unquenchable desire to hold on to what you want so much, while you don't know how. Annelie shows that love is not just a feeling, but also a practice full of considerations, communication, control, adventure, and surrender. The concert form provides speed and energy, while the personal narrative leaves room for humor, vulnerability, and recognition.
