Auteur Stijn Streuvels graced the shortlist of the Nobelprijs Literatuur no fewer than 15 times during his lifetime, received the five-yearly State Prize for Literature three times, and was awarded the Dutch Prize for Literature for his entire oeuvre. His novels ‘De Vlasschaard’ and ‘The Decline of the Waterhoek’ were adapted into films. Exactly 100 years after its first publication, Kurt Defrancq is now bringing Streuvels’ third masterpiece – the novella ‘Life and Death in the Ast’ – to the stage, with live music by Innerwoud. Both the actors and the audience are literally ‘in the Ast’ (a black box instead of classic theater seats).
