The song of the Phoenix

In the twelfth century, the Iranian mystic and poet Attar Neishabouri wrote the masterpiece De Samenspraak van Vogels. In one of the poems of this beautiful book, the legendary Phoenix also appears, whose mysterious songs are the basis of the art of music. With his singing, the Phoenix sets all living beings in motion and forces them to both restlessness and silence. Phoenix knows when his death is approaching. As a loner, bound to nothing, he then builds a pyre around himself and raises a lament. He sings, burns, and shrinks to ashes. From those ashes rises a young Phoenix, bearer of new beauty and renewal. Attar does not tell an endless story here, not even for the mythical Phoenix. He emphasizes that letting go and accepting death are among the most difficult life tasks. Componist Shahab Azinmehr translated the life cycle of the Phoenix into music. Together with Nathan Daems, Seraphine Stragier, and Farnoosh Khodadadeh, he brings Het lied van de Feniks, to experience the beauty of life, death, and the resurrection of this inspiring bird with you.
