Visit the most beautiful city palace of Antwerp

Fri, 10 Jul 2026 · 22:00
Paleis op de Meir, Antwerp
Free
The most beautiful city palace of Antwerp opens its doors this summer. It is 1745 when the rich merchant Johan Alexander van Susteren on the Antwerpse Meir has three properties demolished to build his dream palace there. However, he dies before the works are completely finished. Soon the property arouses the interest of Napoleon Bonaparte. He has the palace refurbished and embellished with French empire furniture, but never stays there. When the palace is ready, he is in exile on Elba. The next owner is King William I of the Netherlands. He furnishes the Hall of the XVII Provinces, but in 1830 the Belgian revolution follows and a new royal house becomes owner. Coveted by many, but inhabited by few: the history of the Paleis op de Meir remains fascinating! Come by and admire the magnificent mirror hall, stroll through the connecting gallery and let yourself be surprised by the various details that you find in the interior.
