Marthe Donas, an abstract life

Marthe Donas, a Belgian figure of modern art, was a strong historical personality of the Brabant Wallon. A museum (the only one in Belgium dedicated to a female artist) is dedicated to her in Ittre. This show does not claim to be an exhaustive biography, but an entertainment that wants to put her back in the light. Through a dynamic and pictorial play, the actors will make you discover her personality, her travels, and her encounters. It also participates in the current movement of rewriting art history by integrating female artists. A century ago, the Belgian artist Marthe Donas established herself as the first representative of abstraction in Belgium. Today, this show wants to give her back her place in the history of Belgian art. Marthe Donas (1885-1967), coming from a bourgeois background unfavorable to artistic aspirations, manages to break free from the constraints of her environment to become the first internationally recognized Belgian artist. In the years following the Première Guerre world war, her singular vision of cubism and her innovative compositions quickly earned her a central role within the European avant-garde.
