Everything is perfect in appearance in this couple. Sybille is a doctor, Daniel works in an architectural firm. They have two children, a house, a comfortable sofa, well-established careers. In short, everything needed to compose the image of a successful life. Until the evening when Franziska, Daniel's ex-girlfriend, arrives at their place in the middle of the night to seek refuge.
From this almost classic starting point of the love triangle, Marius von Mayenburg very quickly shifts expectations. Ex is not just the story of a couple threatened by the return of an old lover. It is a fierce closed-door where everyone finds themselves confronted with their choices, their renunciations, their lies, and their stifled desires. The conjugal mechanics break down, words become weapons, everyday phrases turn into accusations, and the evening tips into a spiral of allegations, revelations, and humiliations.
In this satirical comedy directed by Thibaut Wenger, black humor rubs shoulders with cruelty. We laugh, often yellow, before the relentlessness of the characters to hurt themselves, to justify themselves, to want to be right. But behind the violence of the exchanges, a deeper question emerges: what to do when one discovers oneself a prisoner of a life that one may not have really chosen?
Mayenburg dissects with formidable precision the couple, social success, parenthood, class relations, and the injunctions that shape our existences. Getting married, having children, buying a house, building a career: so many decisions that can become refuges, but also traps. Here, everyone dreams of leaving, but everyone stays, stuck in their contradictions.
Ex stings where it hurts. Under its airs of conjugal satire, the play questions our ability to love, to choose, to tell the truth, and perhaps to start over differently.
