Selma is a Czech immigrant working in an American factory town in the sixties. She is slowly going blind due to a hereditary condition and saves every penny to pay for an operation for her son, so that he does not suffer the same fate. To escape her gray reality, Selma loses herself in fantasies about Hollywood musicals. Specifically for Cinema ZED Leuven The screening on June 11th will be subtitled in English. Commentary Lars Von Trier combines social realism with expressive musical numbers in which Selma's inner world comes to life – machines in the factory transform into an orchestra, prison guards become dancers. Björk plays Selma in a moving, raw role and also composed the music. The film is an emotionally devastating meditation on sacrifice, dreams, and the cruel indifference of the world, culminating in one of the most poignant finales in film history.
