After an illness of more than seven years, Katrien Claes died on November 6, 1991 from the consequences of two brain tumors. She was twelve years old. Her sisters Barbara and Stefanie were nine at that time. Katrientje is a musical performance about the impact of grief in children, brothers and sisters, and its lingering effect on an adult life. Barbara and Stefanie remember from that period mainly the silence and the absence of physical comfort. Their research into family constellations and conversations with trauma experts form the basis for this play. Katrientje searches for space for grief in a time when the tools for this were often lacking, and takes stock of a profound experience that still has an effect to this day.
