From the moment they are within their four walls, a nocturnal confrontation arises in which he exposes his deep-rooted need for recognition and she desperately tries to distance herself from it. What starts as a personal war of words soon touches on larger questions. Both characters carry a background with them that places them outside the white, Western norm. Their struggle is not only about personal frustrations that they compare with each other, but also about the pressure to want to break through prejudices and expectations of the outside world. Noa Tambwe Kabati and Ibtissam Boulbahaiem are inspired for zij en hij by the film Malcolm & Marie van Sam Levinson. This inspiration creates the space for them to dive into the world of a couple that finds itself semi-parallel to their personal world in the art world and wants to give their partly Congolese and Moroccan roots a place in it. In this intimate performance, zij en hij together rummage through themes such as family, love, trauma, art, personal dreams, and faith. zij en hij takes place in an intimate setting, where every moment of lightness only dares to exist fleetingly, but where honesty finally comes to the fore, which makes this night feel both bitter and redeeming.
