Tramlijn Begeerte is a classic from the Amerikaanse Realisme, and established Marlon Brando as one of the greatest method actors, an actor who completely immerses himself in the character. But this is not a light and airy piece. It tackles themes such as alcohol addiction, domestic violence, and rape. Yet it is one of the most performed and beloved pieces, precisely because it is so truthful. Because of the lifelike dialogues and characterizations. Because of the emotions, which strike the stage like whirlwinds. And because of the final chord, brutal and heartbreaking. The piece is 75 years old. And still a contemporary cry from the heart.
