GEEL - INTRODUCTION TO DOCU BY Arnaut Hauben [FREE]

Sat, 26 Sept 2026 · 22:00
Studio Geel, Geel
€8–10
In 2004, report makers Arnout Hauben and Mikhaël Cops followed the life of four people with a psychological vulnerability and their then host families in the Geelse Gezinsverpleging for one year, from Christmas to Christmas. This resulted in a poignant documentary about a world in which the boundary between receiving care and providing care blurs, carried by the music of Vivaldi’s ‘De Vier Jaargetijden’. ‘Geel’ is a chronicle of a lost time, of a lost sense of time in a different form of society. The viewer is briefly torn away from the hyper-fast modern society, where slowness and the unusual are taboo. The documentary shows the characters in sober, frontal tableaus taken from life. They decide for themselves when they step in or out of the frame. The documentary ‘Geel’ was broadcast on Canvas in 2006 and re-edited into a four-part series the following year. The series was internationally acclaimed and won, among other things, the prize for Beste Documentaire at the Seagate Foyle Festival in Great Britain. Prior to the broadcast on Canvas, the documentary was shown at the time in CC De Werft in Geel, an initiative that more than 2,000 people came to watch. Twenty years after the broadcast on Canvas and after that screening in the CC, it is an excellent moment to show this awarded documentary on the big screen again during this Dimpna Year. On Sunday, September 27, Arnout Hauben will briefly introduce the documentary in Studio Geel and look back on the year he spent filming in Geel. De Geelse Gezinsverpleging evolves with the times; after the screening, OPZ Geel will provide a short insight into the current operation of family nursing. Admission is free, screening times and the possibility of registration exclusively via https://studio-geel.be/geel. The registration is valid for a maximum of 2 people and is confirmed by mail. To give as many people as possible the chance to watch the documentary, only registrations in a personal name are accepted. If the screenings are full, a waiting list will be created. If additional screenings are organized, you will also receive a confirmation of your registration by mail. No information can be provided or reservations made by telephone! An initiative of Michel Vanhove, in collaboration with Studio Geel, the Stad Geel and the OPZ Geel. With thanks to Woestijnvis.
