Tattoorist Live - Tijs Vanneste & Tangled Horns

Tijs Vanneste made a six-part series for VRT Canvas in which he travels as a traveling tattoo artist and storyteller through London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Vienna, and Berlin. In every city, he meets fascinating tattoo artists. Artists, sometimes outcasts themselves who express their identity and that of their city through their tattoos. Tijs observes, listens, and gets tattooed, but above all: he discovers the city on the advice of the local tattoo artist. These artists know their city like no other, not only because of the hours they have spent there, but also because of the conversations with their fellow citizens during their tattoo sessions. The artists give Tijs insight into their unique style and their vision on tattooing. After they tattoo Tijs, they take him on a voyage of discovery through special places in the city. ‘Tattoorist’ is at once a travel program, a cultural dialogue, and a portrait of a Europe in ink, image, and music. During the making process, the music grows alongside the images. For every city, Tijs writes soundscapes and his own musical arrangements – songs that not only voice the city, but also his personal impressions and encounters. These soundscapes and songs now form the basis of ‘Tattoorist Live’, an intense trip in which music and soundscapes merge into a moving experience. Tijs surrounds himself with Tangled Horns, the Kempen guitar band with an ironclad live reputation. For years they stood at the top of the underground with their uncompromising energy and sound. Tijs, a fan from the first hour, now gives them a well-deserved kick in the butt, a push towards a wider audience. Covers from the TV series flow seamlessly into soundscapes, after which the band explodes into rock versions that make every city breathe again.
