When, due to war, global warming, rebellious AI, and gender mislabeling, living conditions on Earth threatened to become increasingly impossible, it was decided in 2060 to build a settlement-space station on Mars. Four years later, a team of scientists (along with a thousand fertilized eggs) is sent to Mars to rebuild human civilization from the ground up. However, when (at the start of the play) the four arrive on Mars and wake up from their cryo-cell, they receive the message from Earth that a better planet has been found in the meantime for the restart of civilization and that their mission is no longer important. But their trip to Mars was a one-way ticket. Here they are. Fleeing an impossible planet for… a meaningless existence. Waiting for Godot, but unless Godot has a spaceship, they are going to have to wait a very long time. The four try to make the best of it anyway and set up the basic principles of a new society. It soon becomes clear that completely redefining a new society in practice is just a little less evident than they thought in theory. Do they base themselves on the past, do they try something truly new? Is a utopia a utopia? Can findings from the past truly offer wisdom for the future or are we doomed to always make the same mistakes again, regardless of which planet we are on? Four people, a grumpy robot, and one contact person on Earth who is starting to show an increasing lack of interest in the five. Four individuals unable to form a group, let alone a society. Mars 2064 is a tragicomic search for what it means to be human. Cast: Joke Emmers, Birgit Aertgeerts, Boris Van Severen and Daphne Wellens Scenario: Jef Hoogmartens Regie: Frank Van Passel
