We are going on a walking tour with Marlies Van Tichelen, who worked for the customs service for a long time herself. With her infectious enthusiasm, she takes us on a journey through our fascinating and often dark smuggling past, because smuggling has existed as long as there have been national borders and excise duties. Surrounded by Dutch municipalities, Essen was, of course, a true smuggler's paradise! The well-chosen locations, the best smuggling methods, and, of course, the most important key figures will all be covered during this tour. The walk is on regular roads and is approximately 5 km long.
We will carpool to Essen. Meeting point at 12:30 PM at the Brieleke parking lot in Wommelgem
