Bugonia is a concept from classical antiquity, when people believed that bees could spontaneously arise from the carcass of a dead bull. Teddy, a beekeeper, is a conspiracy theorist who is convinced that aliens want to destroy our planet. He thinks that one of them is already on Earth to prepare for that: Michelle, the CEO of a powerful pharmaceutical company. Together with his cousin, he decides to kidnap her. They tie her up in the basement of their house and shave her head bald so that she can no longer communicate (via her hair) with her fellow species. Yorgos Lanthimos gets the best out of his actors, regular collaborator Emma Stone in the lead. In their sixth joint production, she shines once again. Lanthimos appreciates that Stone is willing to take risks as an actress. Stone, for her part, admires Lanthimos for his unconventional stories and characters. She trusts him as a director through and through. Her co-star Jesse Plemons also plays one of the best roles of his career. Besides the orchestral music of Jerskin Fendrix and the image quality of good old VistaVision-35mm, the set design also impresses. Corporate ethics, the power of large corporations, conspiracy theories, disinformation, the environmental crisis; these are all themes that Lanthimos touches upon in this film. “My film is not a dystopia,” he says. “It is about the now. If we don't make the right choices now, things will go wrong with our planet.” Lanthimos holds up a mirror to us with ‘Bugonia’. But wrapped in a crazy film that keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first to the last minute.
