During this evening concert, Alex Johnson and Kayla Gunderson will perform together, allowing you to enjoy several recognizable works of light music such as 'Phantom The Phantom of the Opera' and 'In the Mood' (Glenn Miller), as well as a number of compositions by Alex. Alex discovered the carillon at the University of and in Rochester, where he also studied physics, languages, mbira, and gamelan. He is currently a carillonneur at the Universiteit van Chicago, the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon with its 72 bells and a weight of 100 tons. He teaches carillon there to 20 students. In 2020, Alex graduated summa cum laude from the Koninklijke Beiaardschool 'Jef Denyn' in Mechelen. In the summer of 2019, he brilliantly won several prizes during the 8th Internationale Beiaardwedstrijd Koningin Fabiola. Alex gives carillon recitals all over the world and gives masterclasses throughout the country. He is an avid composer, improviser, and advocate for new music. Kayla graduated from the Koninklijke Beiaardschool 'Jef Denyn' in Mechelen. Originally from Seattle, she learned to play the carillon at the Universiteit van Rochester in New York. In addition to the carillon, she also obtained a license in Amerikaanse Gebarentaal/English interpreting and works in Chicago. She is an active member of the Professionalism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee of the Guild of Carilloneurs of North America.
