Late summer butterflies in the Hageven

End of August is a wonderful period to explore the Hageven. The heath is in bloom, flowers still attract plenty of insects, and in sunny spots, numerous butterflies flutter through the landscape. During this walk, nature guide and butterfly expert Sam Gielen will take you on a discovery through the different habitats of the Hageven. Het Hageven is a varied nature reserve with heath, grasslands, fens, marshes, and forest edges. That variety ensures that many butterfly species find a suitable living environment there. Along the way, we will look for the species that are active during this period and learn how butterflies use the different biotopes in the area. With some luck, we will meet the silver-studded blue, a species closely linked to heathlands, or the grayling, a characteristic inhabitant of open landscapes. But there is also often a lot to discover in the grasslands and along forest edges. Sam Gielen tells stories along the way about the identification, lifestyle, and ecology of butterflies. Why does a species occur here and not there? What plants do caterpillars need? And how can nature management and biodiversity strengthen each other?
