Dragonfly day excursion in the Sonian Forest (2nd Sunday in Sonian)

Sun, 14 Jun 2026 · 10:00
Bosmuseum Hoeilaart / Onthaalpoort Groenendaal, Hoeilaart
Free
We visit, under the guidance of Jorg Lambrechts, a series of ponds in the upper reaches of the IJse, the Castle Ponds, and the King's Ponds. This area has been thoroughly monitored for dragonflies for years by Arnold Windey. This excursion is also a tribute to Arnold, who passed away in December 2024. The beautiful and striking Hairy Dragonfly and the Broad-bodied Chaser are flying fully in this area at that time. The De Glassnijder and the Variable Damselfly, on the other hand, have never been seen at these ponds, but are in themselves to be expected. In this interesting area, a surprise is also always possible, such as the male White-faced Darter that was seen there in June 2018. In the morning we visit the Castle Ponds, in the afternoon the King's Ponds (at noon there is the opportunity to use the toilets in the Forest Museum). End around 5 PM (those who can only participate until noon are also welcome). Bring: Packed lunch and drink, binoculars, 'dragonfly net', boots. No prior knowledge required. All interested parties are welcome. Pets stay at home. In case of (really) bad weather, the excursion will not take place and we will inform you about this. Jorg Lambrechts has been watching dragonflies since his youth, within the JNM (Youth Association for Nature and Environment). His passion for nature research led him to study biology. Subsequently, he spent 10 years researching the distribution and ecology of dragonflies in an ecological consultancy firm. Since 2011, Jorg has been working for the research department of Natuurpunt.
